What is the relationship between leadership and play? Why are skills gained through play crucial to cohesive communities? How can leaders work with play-based processes to develop engagement, interconnection and collaboration towards community sustainability and development?

The value of play as a human way of learning and connecting is hardly acknowledged, especially in a society where material productivity is so deeply entrenched with work ethics. What have we lost, and are losing as we neglect the skills and abilities gained through play? How do artists work organically and consciously through play, to create experiences that help audiences and participants to understand their value, purpose and agency?

In this session, dramaturg and educator, Charlene Rajendran will present thinking points, moderate dialogue, and suggest ways to think about play in relation to leadership. Interdisciplinary artists, Li Xie (The Lesson), Koh Hui Ling (GoLi/SCENES Forum Theatre) and Lin Shiyun (Let’s Go PLay OutSide!) will discuss their practice and lead a practical workshop that distills the principles, conditions and considerations for creating play-based approaches to community engagement. Find out more about the practitioners here.

Whether you are an arts or creative practitioner, social or community worker, educator, funder, policymaker or in management, come join us in a session where we play and understand play!

FAQ about The Greenhouse Sessions

The Greenhouse Sessions is a programme by ArtsWok Collaborative. It is a community of practice where people who share a common concern for arts-based community development, teach one another to do it better through a process of regular engagement.

Our sessions involve:

  • Connecting with other experienced practitioners working in the field of arts in communities
  • Exchanging information, stories and personal experiences in a way that builds understanding and insight
  • Generating new knowledge and collaboration opportunities through this shared platform to kick-start meaningful action

As this is a community of practice, the sessions will be open only to those who have some experience or expertise related to the session, as well as individuals who have a keen interest to contribute to the topics of the session.

The emphasis here is on group learning, so while literature and other resources will be made available to participants from time to time, the collective wisdom of the community of practice is the real treasure. So come prepared to give and to receive.
