What do we value, across sectors, as community-engaged practitioners? What is the value we bring to the communities we work with? And how do we communicate our values to stakeholders that support and fund our work?

Join us for the ArtsWok Greenhouse Sessions #24 as we dialogue and reflect on the value of the work we do and the values which inform our work in arts-based community development or community-engaged work. Drawing from our review of the last decade of The Greenhouse Sessions and the recent ArtsWok Learning Forum, we recognise the need to identify and communicate the value(s) of community-engaged arts. By understanding the tangible value of the work we do and why we choose to do this work, we can build effective vocabularies to deepen understanding and recognition of the field.

Through group dialogue and sharings, we will reflect on individual and potential shared values that motivate our work. We will also explore how to identify and capture the value and impact of community-engaged practice through arts and culture. Finally, we will discuss new vocabularies to articulate the value of our work to different stakeholders, as well as across sectors.

Session Recap

Our session began with a creative exercise, where participants introduced themselves through visual ‘billboards’ before reflecting on the values that shape their work. Through paired and small group activities, we explored how personal and community values intersect, exchanging stories to uncover the unique strengths within our practice.

We also examined how different stakeholders perceive the value of our work and discussed ways to communicate this across sectors. Su-Lin introduced the Continuum of Impact framework, using Both Sides, Now at Yishun as a case study. The session closed with a rich discussion on navigating misaligned values, maintaining regular check-ins, and developing shared language in community-driven work.

FAQ about ArtsWok Greenhouse Sessions

The ArtsWok Greenhouse Sessions are open to practitioners who have some experience or expertise related to arts-based community development. We also welcome individuals with a keen interest in engaging community through the arts.

The emphasis here is on group learning, so while literature and other resources will be made available to participants, the collective wisdom of the network of practitioners is the real treasure. Come prepared to give and to receive!

Admission is by donation. While we welcome what you can give, a suggested amount of $40 will help us cover some session costs. Your contribution will help us provide this important space where practitioners (seasoned and new) gather for learning and dialogue on the arts-based community development field. Donations of $10 and above are tax-deductible.
