The Greenhouse Sessions #19

The Greenhouse Sessions #20
The Art of Culture in Community Development

Date and Time

Saturday 7 November 2020
10am – 12.30pm
Online Event

What is the value of cultural or arts-based approaches to community development? How do artists and creatives invested in co-creating with communities contribute towards the development of local cultures which are microcosms of the larger society? What kinds of partnerships and collaborations need to occur to engender community development approaches here that result in a deep understanding of agency, solidarity and care, across difference?

In The Greenhouse Sessions #20, also part of Community Forum 2020, ArtsWok will be sharing the insights from our latest case study, “The Art of Culture in Community Development” synthesized from the study of 3 case examples:

  1. The Community Theatre led by Izzaty Ishak, a community worker at Beyond Social Services
  2. Curating Whampoa (2016-2018) led by Tsao Foundation as well as Professor Thomas K. Kong
  3. Let’s Go PLay OutSide! (LGPO!) by 3Pumpkins, led by Lin Shiyun at Lengkok Bahru (2018), in collaboration with South Central Community Family Service Centre

Apart from a presentation and sharing by ArtsWok, the session also includes a panel Q&A session with the artists/creatives featured in the case study, as well as conversation breakout rooms with the artists/creatives on specific insights covered in the case study–such as the unique value of the artist, embeddedness, spaces, and sustainability! Participants will get to indicate their preference for the breakout rooms after their attendance is confirmed.

We highly encourage participants to read the case study beforehand for the session to be more meaningful. The case study can be accessed from here.

FAQ about The Greenhouse Sessions

The Greenhouse Sessions is a programme by ArtsWok Collaborative. It is a community of practice where people who share a common concern for arts-based community development, teach one another to do it better through a process of regular engagement.

Our sessions involve:

  • Connecting with other experienced practitioners working in the field of arts in communities
  • Exchanging information, stories and personal experiences in a way that builds understanding and insight
  • Generating new knowledge and collaboration opportunities through this shared platform to kick-start meaningful action

As this is a community of practice, the sessions will be open only to those who have some experience or expertise related to the session, as well as individuals who have a keen interest to contribute to the topics of the session.

The emphasis here is on group learning, so while literature and other resources will be made available to participants from time to time, the collective wisdom of the community of practice is the real treasure. So come prepared to give and to receive.
