What is the role of a citizen? How can the arts and culture make a difference in encouraging people to be civic-conscious and engaged? What are some strategies that artists have used to engage across difference or negotiate power?

The Greenhouse Sessions is back! Since it’s election season, we thought it would be apt to explore the theme “Arts and Citizenship”.

Three arts practitioners will be sharing their work and their ideas.

Becca D’Bus/Eugene Tan is a producer and drag queen who will discuss how performance can upend societal judgment and literally save lives through encouraging audiences to re-examine their stereotypes about groups of people. As the former Director of Community Engagement of a theatre company in the US for six years, Eugene initiated programmes that dealt with HIV prevention work with vulnerable populations.

Koh Hui Ling, who is the associate artistic director of Drama Box, will talk about her interdisciplinary work and how GoLi, their inflatable pop-up theatre activates public spaces and contributes to civic engagement.

Alecia Neo, a visual artist, will share about Unseen: Constellations, her long-term art project which provides a platform for youths living with visual impairment to explore self-identity and their dreams through a creative process, bridging their world with those of sighted people.

The Greenhouse Sessions is a programme by ArtsWok Collaborative. It is a community of practice where people who share a common concern for arts-based community development, teach one another to do it better through a process of regular engagement.

Our sessions involve:

  • Connecting with other experienced practitioners working in the field of arts in communities
  • Exchanging information, stories and personal experiences in a way that builds understanding and insight
  • Generating new knowledge and collaboration opportunities through this shared platform to kick-start meaningful action

As this is a community of practice, the sessions will be open only to those who have some experience or expertise related to the session, as well as individuals who have a keen interest to contribute to the topics of the session.

The emphasis here is on group learning, so while literature and other resources will be made available to participants from time to time, the collective wisdom of the community of practice is the real treasure. So come prepared to give and to receive.
